WASHINGTON, DC AREA - PEACE AND JUSTICE



At our nation's capital, we also get involved in advocacy. You are invited to view the activities of the annual ecumenical gathering concerning urgent global issues in Washington, DC. The web site is www.advocacydays.org.

ELCA Washington Office is the former Lutheran Office of Governmental Affairs (LOGA). Their role is to advocate for social justice issues on behalf of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. They have an easy way for you to register on-line in order to receive newsworthy items directly to your email address. Their web site is located at: www.elca.org/advocacy.

Human Sexuality Statement - Adopted at the 2009 Churchwide Assembly

Since 1991 the ELCA has adopted ten social statements.  The ELCA Church Council also adopts messages that are grounded in the social statements, call attention to current social issues, and encourage action.

Stay with
 

  • Refocus on the ministries of the ELCA
  • Work with Interfaith and Ecumenical partners including the Presbyterians (Health Care Reform), Catholic Charities, and Jewish Family and Children Services
  • Work with refugee agencies
  • Collaborate with the Pittsburgh Presbyterian Health and Welfare Council
  • Compile a network of interfaith resources available to respond to issues such as Adopt a Family

Raise Up

  • Use Did You Know pop-ups on the web site and the synod newsletter
  • Offer educational materials on health care, disaster preparedness, immigration, mental illness, and prisoners
  • Green subcommittee will take on the task of making our assembly and congregations more green
  • Utilize the synod, ELCA, and LAMPa websites to increase awareness and inform others of pressing legislative issues
  • Offer reading materials and movies that address social issues and make those resources available at our Resource Center

Send Out

  • Contact Congress and Senate regarding Health Care Reform
  • Develop   a list of pastors and those in the Aaron Ministry Program with a passion and encourage pulpit exchanges
  • Organize and offer a Advocacy Fair on disabilities, social ministries, and poverty awareness
